Abstract On March 29, 1986 Howard Swan celebrated his eightieth birthday. 1986 also marked the forty-ninth year of Howard's teaching career. All of the contributors have been touched by that career, some many times over many years. Several writers featured in this volume were so enriched by their experiences with Howard at Occidental College that they became university choral conductors themselves, after graduating with degrees in English, economics, and political science.
