Scope and content The Manchu collection consists of 32 documents, all in English. The Manchu are one of the largest minority groups in China but have become largely assimilated. Most of the documents in this collection focus on an earlier period when the Manchu were the imperial rulers of China (1644-1911) and their homeland in northeast China. Shirokogorov (1924) provides the classic ethnography of the Manchu, focusing on social organization, based on his fieldwork in the area from 1915 to 1918. Anert (1932) examines the agriculture and climate of the region covering the period 1880-1930. The Economic history of Manchuria covers the period from 1860-1920. Lattimore (1935) discusses the Japanese, Russian, and Chinese efforts to colonize Manchuria and Jones (1949) looks specifically at the Japanese colony of Manchuko. Nineteen of these documents are chapters from the 1956 book, A Regional Handbook on Northeast China, and cover a variety of topics including a general overview, history, education, religion, government, and foreign policy (Tang); settlements (Chang); ethnic groups and language (Posch); class (Naff), family (Hirabayashi); intellectuals (Mann); labor and trade (Huang); health (Hsiung); politics (Lo); agriculture (Meyers); industry (Hung); and maps (University of Washington. Far Eastern and Russian Institute). Clubb (1954) also provides an economic analysis of Manchuria in the early period of Communist reforms. More recent books include Elliott's (2001) discussion of the importance of ethnicity in supporting Manchu rule and Isett's (2007) examination of the economic problems in maintaining an exclusive ethnic reservoir in the traditional Manchu homeland on which Manchu identity and privilege were based. Other topics include Manchu literature (Huang 1990), gender relations (Elliott 1999), land use (Reardon-Anderson 2000) and language (Norman 2003).
