| Abstract | Leopold Stokowski attracted notice and notoriety whatever he did. He has been called a charlatan, an eccentric, a genius, and a womanizer--and every description fits. A pioneer in the recording of classical music, the champion of 20th-century composers, musical consultant and star of Walt Disney's Fantasia, and a vigorous musician into his nineties, Stokowski was a romantic figure in all sense of the word. As a conductor he enjoyed improving the status of ordinary orchestras and imposing his novel interpretations on the classics of the masters, as a lover he pursued women all over the world, conducting a trans-Atlantic affair with Greta Garbo and marrying three times into the upper echelons of American society (the last time to Gloria Vanderbilt). With all of his gifts, Stokowski took unusual care to mystify his past. Abram Chasins has overcome this obstacle with the patience and reasoning of a detective and the recreative powers of a historian. The result is a biography of a musician of tremendous energy and imagination in all his moods and contradictions. |
