Abstract In spite of his undisputed eminence as a musician, Mahler remains a neglected figure in this country. This book, at once deep in its sympathetic understanding and incisive in its evaluation, thus fills a hiatus in the knowledge of American readers and music lovers. First as a young conductor revering the master and later as a devoted friend, the author relates his memories of his close relationship with Mahler. As these intimate recollections flow together into a living portrait of this strange and commanding genius, the scenes of his musical activities compose a picture of the Austrian Empire as it was then, in its political decline, and yet brilliant in its musical and intellectual life, where Mahler played a dominant role.
