Abstract The villancico is a unique literary and musical manifestation of the Spanish people. Since its first appearance in the Cancioneros of the late fifteenth century, the villancico as a genre, amalgamates compositions from a variety of music and lyric sources. A significant source of eighteenth-century villancicos is the Malaga Cathedral where over five hundred of Juan Frances de Iribarren's villancicos are housed. Through his villancicos, Iribarren emerges as an inventive composer and skilled craftsman.
