Abstract This anthology of psychoanalytic studies of music ranges from considerations of the function of music in the mental life of composer and listener alike--including the very enjoyment of music--to those of form and content. The relationship of music and affect is treated, musical creativity and inspiration are explored, and developmental aspects of musical ability are considered. There are also a number of psychoanalytic studies of individual composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Ives, Mahler, Mozart, Rossini, Schumann, and Wagner.
