Summary Ray is a failed novelist and a failing investigative journalist who is trying to get a commission from the Observer. He has decided to write about human trafficking, and visits a brothel in London to try to get a story. There he meets Anja, a twenty-one-year-old Moldovan woman who was first sold into prostitution when she was sixteen. But Ray finds himself being drawn closer and closer to Anja. As the lines are blurred between reporting and interfering with her life, we are confronted with the uncomfortable truth that slavery is alive and well in modern society. Written for the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade, 'Sold' was first performed in November 2007.
