| Summary | 'Spoiled', first performed at Glasgow's Close Theatre Club in 1970, is about the tensions in a teacher's home when he invites one of his pupils to spend the weekend before the exam for some last-minute coaching. The over-mothered Donald is a nervous boy anxious to better himself for his mother's sake and to please his teacher. Howarth's natural enthusiasm and flair for getting the best out of dull pupils seem to mask a kind of self-indulgence. Joanna, his heavily pregnant wife, full of unease, begins to see this clearly as the weekend progresses: the realisation only makes her more vulnerable. |
