| Summary | John starts to walk home. It takes him four days to get from London to Northampton, and he is not in a very good state when he gets there. Out of work and disillusioned, he tries to work out why he swapped the anonymity of corporate city life for the comforts of home, since everyone else seems to be trying to get away from Northampton. After walking so far, he does not know in which direction he should go next, and his loneliness and disconnection become a compelling portrait of a generation's alienation. First performed in Northampton in 2010, 'Town' is inspired by the journey made by the poet John Clare, who escaped from an asylum and travelled on foot for four days back to his hometown. |
