| Abstract | "Edward J. Dent (1876-1957), considered by many to be the doyen of English musicology, devoted most of his long life to operatic activities (books, articles, translations, performances, etc.). The present work was started in 1920 when he undertook the revival of Henry Purcell's The Fairy Queen at Cambridge University, where he later served as Professor of Music (1926-1941). Since its original publication in 1928, Foundations of English Opera has served as the standard one-volume work. Later authors are deeply indebted to Dent for his groundbreaking work in tracing early operatic developments in England during the 16th century, through Elizabethan times, into the stifling atmosphere of the Commonwealth era, and finally through the reblossoming of the Restoration period. Poetic contributions by Shakespeare, Dryden, Milton, Jonson, and Shirley (to cite but a few) were set to music by Henry Purcell and others in such forms as the English masque. The problems of English operatic activity, its relationship to the ever-flowering 17th-century Italian opera, and other matters of significance are discussed with clarity and thoroughness."--Dust jacket. |
