| Summary | Annotation Two volumes contain 180-plus articles from the fourth in a series of biennial symposia, held September 1997. The meeting, which attracted some 200 scientists from 16 countries, occurred at a crucial time in the history of gamma-ray burst research. In early 1997, 30 years after the detection of the first GRB, counterparts to bursts were finally detected at optical and radio wavelengths; the previous lack of such counterparts was often cited as the primary impediment to understanding the physics of gamma-ray bursts. Papers are organized under many categories: global properties, locations, temporal properties, spectral properties, counterpart overview, x-ray observation, optical observations, radio observations, host galaxies, shocks, afterglows, theory, models, instrumentation and techniques, and soft gamma-ray repeaters. Descriptions of several programs to make optical observations of GRB fields using dedicated telescopes are included. No subject index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR |
