Abstract These volumes make available a representative selection from all the great writings on music from the times of ancient Greece through the Romantic era. The wealth and variety of the selections, the careful annotations, and the fact that most selections appear for the first time in English or in new translations by the editor make this an invaluable series. The reader can now acquire a comprehensive picture of the history of musical thought and of the changing ideas and interpretations of music throughout the ages. The five volumes provide a veritable library of musical comment and discourse: there are the philosophical theories of Plato and Aristole that embody the Greek view of music, the early Christian view of music as seen in the writings of the Church Fathers, from Clement of Alexandria to St. Augustine, the elaborate theories of the medieval scholars, the first stirrings of modern concepts among Renaissance musicians and the psychological attitudes of baroque writers. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are represented by significant selections from Jean Paul, E. T. A. Hoffmann, C. P. E. Bach, Rousseau, Gluck, Schumann, Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner. With these volumes the author opens up a whole world to the music lover and student, so that not only highly trained scholars but every interested reader can discover the intellectual and aesthetic foundations of musical development.
