Summary Annotation With a strong and competitive export industry, Germany appears to be recovering from a three-year period of economic stagnation. Some fundamental problems still remain, including the weak economic growth of the labour market, which has affected consumer demand and business confidence. The Government has instituted major economic reform to stimulate growth, which will be important to reduce Government debt, and create an environment for the creation of new enterprises and widen market competition. This survey, divided into five chapters, examines the following areas: the main issues and policy challenges facing Germany; the linking of fiscal consolidation to public sector reform; increasing the capacity of the economy to create employment; fostering product market competition and improving the capacity to innovate.
