| Abstract | This book provides instructions for making double reeds for woodwinds of the Renaissance period. Lack of standardization of these instruments often requires that a special reed be made to fit a particular instrument, and players must rely on their own skills to make and adjust their reeds. This manual opens with a discussion of the acoustic functions of the reed, the general principles of reed design as they pertain to various types of woodwinds, and the relationship of embouchure to reed design. It then gives specific instructions for all the stages of assembling a reed, from the initial gouging to the final scraping, and describes the tools necessary for the process. Individual chapters are devoted to various families of double-reed instruments, including shawms, curtals, crumhorns, racketts, and sordunes. Designs and dimensions are provided for each style of reed, along with tips for adjusting and tuning a reed for a particular instrument, and detailed attention is given to capped reeds. Throughout the book, historical evidence for reed styles is cited for aid the player in developing good reed design. |
