| Abstract | This guide deals specifically with music education in the elementary school. The author's main objective is for the classroom teacher to develop an understanding of why music education is important, how it works and how music can be a powerful force in the classroom. The author also stresses how overall learning can be enhanced by utilizing music in the classroom. He provides suggestions, class descriptions and lesson plans using music in routine activities, whole language, integrating music into language arts and social studies and using music to develop the cultural literacy of students. Upon completion of this text, teachers should understand the philosophical rationale for including music education in schools. They will feel confident describing elementary music concepts and objectives for music education, discussing the Orff and Kodaly approaches to music education, and using music throughout the school day to enhance learning. With proper in-class activities, teachers will also develop competence in and positive attitudes about singing and they will be able to offer children quality musical experiences. A sequential arrangement of folk songs concludes this informative guide. |
