| Subject | The Princeton Sandstone (Upper Mississippian) of the Mauch Chunk Group in southern West Virginia is a conglomeratic sandstone that is underlain by the Hinton Formation and overlain by the Bluestone Formation. The unit ranges in composition from a lithic arenite to a sub-litharenite. The primary provenance of the unit, as determined by petrographic analysis thin sections, is a distant quartz/metamorphic-rich source. Rip-up clasts of limestone and mudstone were locally derived. Predominant sedimentary structures consist of southwestward trending trough crossbeds. Fining upward sequences are also prolific throughout the field area. During a probable lowstand in sea level prior to Princeton deposition, subaerial valleys were incised into the underlying Hinton Formation. Lithofacies and sedimentary structures within the Princeton indicate deposition by a southwest-flowing braided fluvial system that was influenced by marine processes in its lower reaches. The Princeton is a valley-fill sequence formed during a base level rise and the initial phases of a marine transgression. |
