Abstract Though Paul Honigsheim died before completing his sociology of music, he left behind a rich legacy of notes, chapter drafts, and rough outlines. By collecting these materials and editing them with care, sensitivity, and scholarly acumen, K. Peter Etzkorn has created a work of unusual scope and unity, a work that represents no less than the definition of a new field of study. This book illustrates the various connections between music and the society in which it is created and performed. An historical treatment of major European and American approaches to the sociology of music, and an extensive introduction to Honigsheim's scholarship have been added by Dr. Etzkorn, but beyond this, the ideas and discussions here are Professor Honigsheim's. These include: on the uses of music in society; on various occasions for the performance of music; on the variety of persons and activities involved in making music; on class and religious factors in music; on music, musicians, and sponsorship; on economic aspects of music; on political and nationalistic dimensions of music; on forms of music and forms of society. Sociologists, anthropologists, and musicologists will find much that is new in these sections--particularly, Max Weber's fragment on the sociology of music (1921), updated by Honigsheim's own recollection of what Weber was trying to do, and discussions of antisemitism and fascism in their application to musical matters. Two extensive bibliographies--one selected and annotated by Dr. Honigsheim, one prepared by Dr. Etzkorn containing later sources--supplement the material, suggest directions Dr. Honigsheim might have taken and avenues open for exploration by others. In addition to sociologists, anthropologists, and musicologists, this book offers valuable information to music teachers, the informed layman, music critics, and makes useful collateral reading in such courses as the sociology of art/music, music history, and the sociology of knowledge.
