Abstract An incisive and engaging study of operatic star Maria Callas that examines her important contributions to 20th century opera. Rather than delving into Callas's often described temperament, slimming cure, cancellations, Onassis affair (all are here relegated to their rightful place as mere incidentals), the biographer focuses instead on the qualities that made Callas an interpreter of the front rank. He analyzes with searching insight the wealth of recorded documentation from official and unofficial sources and quotes from authorities and eyewitnesses such as John Ardoin, Andrew Porter, and Henry Wisneski. Special attention is paid to the men who helped mold her state and studio performances--Visconti, Zeffirelli, Legge and the like.
