Abstract "Developing Faculty Members in Liberal Arts Colleges analyzes the career stage challenges these faculty members must overcome, such as a lack of preparation for teaching, limited access to resources and mentors, and changing expectations for excellence in teaching, research, and service to become academic leaders in their discipline and at these distinctive institutions. Drawing on research conducted at the thirteen institutions of the Great Lakes Colleges Association, Vicki L. Baker, Laura Gail Lunsford, and Meghan J. Pifer propose a compelling Alignment Framework for Faculty Development in Liberal Arts Colleges to show how these colleges succeed--or sometimes fail--in providing their faculties with the right support to be successful"-- Provided by publisher.
Abstract "What is it like to be a faculty member in a liberal arts colleges (LACs)? What are the particular demands and expectations of that work? How does it vary across and within rank and career stages? How is it different from academic work in other types of postsecondary institutions? And what are colleges and universities doing to support faculty work in liberal arts colleges? What should they be doing? This book explores these questions and more through a careful synthesis of qualitative and quantitative data from hundreds of faculty members working in liberal arts colleges, as well as the administrators who support their work. What emerges from that synthesis is a framework for supporting faculty work and development in liberal arts colleges, and related recommendations for faculty members, campus administrators, and others interested in understanding the critical role that faculty members play in LACs"-- Provided by publisher.
