Abstract This book presents the historical development of gender borders in the kibbutz and the moshav, two democratic, socialist-inspired forms of settlement that grew out of the Jewish national movement in Palestine. Presenting multifaceted voices of women, it points to central mechanisms that (re-)produce gender inequality in (post-)modernity and emphasizes the impossibility of achieving gender equality without challenging hegemonic masculinities.
