Abstract The bold and vigorous posture which both medieval and Renaissance man maintained toward life declared itself in music as in other expressions. Here, edited to modern notation, are selections from this robust music, ranging in time from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth and in occasion from the alehouse, battlefield, and bower to high ecclesiastic ceremony. The author has gathered this music from the original sources and from scholarly editions and has edited it for moderns. His comments position each piece in the literature and provide information on its performance. An English translation accompanies the texts, which appear in full. The University of Missouri Press has issued an accompanying recording of the contents of the book as performed by the Collegium Musicum of the University of Missouri under Professor Minor's direction and using reproductions of the instruments of the time.
