Abstract Since 1964 this book has been the standard guide to the research and reference literature of music. The fourth edition, revised, a completely corrected new edition, retains the scope, authority, and organization of previous editions that have made this book indispensable to scholars and librarians. Music librarians and general reference librarians have depended upon this work as a guide to information sources on music of all styles and periods. Now containing annotated listings of more than 3,000 key sources, the revised fourth edition is organized by category of source material. The book covers dictionaries and encyclopedias, histories and chronologies, sources of systematic and historical musicology, bibliographies of music, catalogs, yearbooks, and directories. New to the revised fourth edition is a reorganization of the "Miscellaneous" chapter into five sections, and the inclusion of an index of works in numbered series--a helpful list of titles in numerical order within each series--in addition to indexes of authors, editors, reviewers, subjects, and titles. As in the original fourth edition, there is a section on women in music, and the section treating bibliographies of music for performance and instruction is organized by instrument, by voice, and by performing ensemble. A number of computer-based bibliographic tools are indentified and discussed. Like the previous three editions, this one-volume work will remain the constant bibliographic companion of musicologists, graduate students in music, teachers of music at all levels, and music librarians. Other music specialists and librarians involved with the humanities will find it useful as well.
