Summary Description: Illustrated copy, dated October 1768 at Besancon, of selected passages from Labatt's extensive Nouveau voyage aux isles de l'Amérique, first published in 1722. The manuscript begins with a description of the physical appearance of the Carib Indians and one of their important weapons, a special club. There are detailed notes on many of the unique specimens of plant life found in the French islands of the West Indies, such as manioc, pineapples, avocados, guavas, sugar cane, coconut and date palms, reeds, pawpaws, cotton, and cinnamon, as well as strange animals such as lizards, sharks, manatee, parrots and other tropical birds, armadilloes, boars, and crabs. Accompanying the descriptions are detailed pen and watercolor Drawings & Artworks. Also included is an index of the plants and animals discussed in the ms. French clergyman, botanist, writer, explorer, ethnographer, soldier, engineer, and landowner.
