Summary Description: Diary account of Col. Burriel's reconnaissance journey to the islands of Mindanao and Joló, containing detailed descriptions of military defences; notes on the geography, trade, resources, agriculture, history, people and customs of the area; and sketches and maps of towns and fortifications. Burriel focuses his description on the towns and forts where the expedition made extended stops, such as Cebú City, Zamboanga, Cotabato, Tamontaca, Tumbao, fort of Taviran, Samal Island, Mailao, and Pollok. With each description, he includes sketches and maps of the towns and their approaches from the sea. He also records the inauguration of the new sultan of Joló Island in which expedition members took part, and mentions the friendship treaty negotiated between the sultan and Spanish officials. Throughout his diary, Burriel observes the interrelationships between Christian and Muslim (Moro) communities in the Philippines.
