Sauvages Nouvelle Zelande

Summary Description: Research notes made by the natural historian Joseph Paul Gaimard and copied by Louis Freycinet recording a physical examination of a Maori chief, Piro, who had arrived in Port Jackson from the Bay of Islands, accompanying Samuel Marsden. The notes include detailed measurements of every part of Piro's body, in both metric and imperial units; an extract taken from Southey's History of Brazil concerning the tribesmen of the Madeira River (who keep shrunken heads of their enemies); and a short description of a Maori head which Gaimard had acquired.
