Summary Description: Petition of Captain John Welbe to Lord Townshend, which represents what is believed to be the first scheme put forward by an Englishman to exploit Australia and the adjacent islands, accompanied by a further a petition (and supporting material) from Welbe to Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole, protesting the falseness of charges which had resulted in his being gaoled in the King's Bench Prison. The volume also includes items relating to the provenance of the petitions.
