Summary Description: In 1766 this British ship explored Newfoundland and Labrador with Constantine Phipps, Captain Thomas Adams, and Joseph Banks aboard. The purpose of the journey was to transport a party of mariners to Chateau Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, to build a fort, to continue strengthening relations with the indigenous population, and to survey some of the coast of Newfoundland. In 1766 Banks met James Cook briefly in St John's, Newfoundland, through their mutual friend Thomas Adams. Includes logs kept by Thomas Adams, Andrew Wilkinson and Francis Banks who all commanded HMS Niger. The logs are brief and succinct with occasional further information.
