Summary Description: A detailed journal kept by John MacGillivray aboard the HMS Herald. MacGillivray was the naturalist aboard this expedition. The journal opens with some content from 1834 before the journal relating to this expedition, 1854-1855 begins. MacGillivray mentions reaching the 'promised land' (Fiji Islands) after a 'pleasant voyage' of 795 days. Describes landscape with some Drawings & Artworks, relations with natives, descriptions of natives at the Fiji Islands, Ovalau, the New Hebrides, Futuna, Solomon Islands. There are many descriptions of the flora and fauna of the area as well as local customs and the expedition's interactions while on the islands.
