Abstract Beginning in November 1928 at the opera when the irresistible rhythm and power of Bolero first swept the musical public of Paris off its feet and sent one of its auditors through the exit shouting "Au fou!," the author tells the story of Ravel's life as the adventure in creative living which it was. She relates the artist to the man, and both to their time, in a manner which is both rare and exciting. The result is a biography which is important in itself and first-rate reading as well. For all its merit as a narrative account of a fascinating man and his time, the serious student of music will find this book informative and authoritative. Ravel's work and its varying reception by the critics and the public, his relation to the other great musicians of his time--Debussy, Satie, Faure, and many others--the account of his years of study, of the Conservatoire, and of the Prix de Rome competitions which were so heartbreaking for him, are set down with a meticulous regard for fact.
