American history in video
Summary The United States entered the Vietnam War in earnest in 1964 after a controversial incident in the Gulf of Tonkin. The incident was an attack on an American destroyer, the Maddox, by North Vietnamese PT boats. The outrage and the alleged attack two days later on the Turner Joy provoked the U.S. Congress to give President Johnson a free hand in running the war.
