| Abstract | Research tells us that while the average length of clinical treatment runs 5-8 sessions, most clients seeking therapy come only once, underscoring how important both therapeutic effectiveness and a keen marketing sense are in that first session. In an age online profile shopping clients are more discerning, coming to therapy with clear expectations about what they want and don't want in a therapist. While first sessions have always been a challenge for students and novices, now even the most seasoned therapist is realizing that first sessions are as much about sales as soul. Successful first sessions can be boiled down to clients leaving believing that 'Yes, this is the right place and the right person.' In this workshop, we will walk through the tasks and steps of a successful first session, from that initial contact to the 'closing of the deal'. From both a therapeutic and marketing perspective, we'll map out the skills and goals essential for success, and discuss the mistakes to avoid. Regardless of clinical orientation, participants will understand how to create that right person, right place result so that clients leave feeling safe, confident, clear, and motivated. |
