Abstract David Mooney, a Pilates specialist who runs the Modern Body Contrology studio in Kansas City, Mo., discusses the Pilates method of contrology, an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates as a means of using the mind to work the body more efficiently. Mooney, a former dancer, talks about his dance career in Kansas City, and his studies of the Pilates method in New York with Romana Kryzanowsky, who carried on Joseph Pilates's work after his death in 1967. He describes Pilates's invention and use of devices such as the Universal Reformer as aids in executing the exercises, and the benefits of the method in rehabilitating and conditioning the body.
