Abstract This episode of Footnotes: The Classics of Ballet is about La Bayadere. La Bayadère is based on an ancient Indian poem, Sakuntala, the story concerns Nikia's love for Solor, who loves her in return, and Solor's obligation to wed Gamzatti. Gamzatti murders her rival and the inconsolable Solor envisions Nikia inviting him to join her in the Kingdom of the Shades. Excerpts from performances by the Kirov Ballet are shown.
