Variant title Teaching with Bayley : underachieving boys : getting involved
Abstract Bexleyheath School in Kent is one of the largest co-ed comprehensives in the country with over 2,000 pupils. As in many schools the boys aren't performing as well as the girls. John Bayley visits the school to investigate the particular problem of Year 10 boys in the English Department who trail 20% behind the girls. He discovers the problem is at its worst on the C/D borderline and observes NQT Carrie Andrews teaching such a class. PE is a favourite subject with many of the boys and they are lively and difficult to teach. In this programme, Bayley suggests ways to burn off the boys' energy and Carrie tests out a lively starter, which seems to help the boys focus on their written work later in the lesson.
