Abstract Some experts claim that children should learn about sexual differences and appropriate behaviour from as young as nursery age. Many schools are resisting in response to pressure from parents and the media. Early Sex Education investigates the policies implemented by three different schools and sets the scene for discussion on the age at which sex education should be taught. At Shepherd School headteacher David Stewart explains the importance of teaching pupils about their bodies from nursery age, a view shared by sex education pioneer Dylis Went. At another primary school, life cycles and reproduction are taught as part of the science curriculum in Year 6, complimented by four lessons from a school nurse. Head teacher Paul Heery is satisfied that this is all the sex education pupils need until secondary school. At Sketchley Hill School, the school recognises that sex education is important for children and begins teaching pupils at Year 5.
Abstract Sex education pioneer Dylis Went joins headteachers from three different primary schools in a discussion on the difficulties and controversies surrounding sex and relationship education. The discussion starts with the headteachers outlining their policies and the level to which they involve parents. One question quickly dominates the conversation, How should sex education respond to the sexual imagery children are subjected to every day? The discussion highlights the difficulties and controversies surrounding sex and relationship education. It illustrates how mainstream schools can learn from special schools in developing their policies.
