Teachers have used praise to congratulate achievement but praise can also be targeted at the strategy as well as the pupil. It can then direct pupils, or at least nudge them, along the right line of enquiry. The approach, which is known to be effective across ages and subjects, is demonstrated here in a maths lesson at Heather Primary School in Leicestershire.
