Abstract On average 20 schools a week suffer an arson attack. Many Secondary and Primary schools are underestimating the danger they are facing from young firesetters. This programme looks at the impact of arson on schools, what can be done to minimise the risks, and the firesetters themselves explain why they do it. We follow a group of young firesetters undergoing one of the many interventions to tackle their behaviour run by the fire service. The LIFE project takes 15 young people for one week and attempts to turn them into a disciplined team of rookie firefighters. Using controversial shock tactics, the fire service also exposes the young people to the potential consequences of their fire-setting actions.
