Vigilante terror in Fontana : the tragic story of O'Day H. Short and his family / by Myra Tanner Weiss.

Abstract Account of the death of the entire Short family two months prior. O'Day Short, an African-American husband and father of two had broken the color barrier in Fontana, California, by building a home in the downtown neighborhood. The local Chamber of Commerce had offered to buy the house at full value, though when the family refused, death threats began to arrive. On the night of December 16, 1945, the family home exploded in a fire ball, all four members of the family, including the children aged 7 and 9, would succumb to their burns. The present pamphlet includes a brief introduction by Carrie Stokes Morrison, sister of Helen Short, the wife of O'Day. The cover illustration by noted cartoonist for the union and labor press Bernard Seaman shows the meaty first of a "Native Fascist" plunging the dagger into the personification of the "Minority," the tip of the dagger just poking the back of the personification of "Labor Unions." -- Bookseller's note.
