| Abstract | A biography of the Austrian Jewish composer Herbert Zipper who was born to a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna in 1904. Describes the rise of the Nazi regime in Austria, and Zipper's imprisonment in Dachau and Buchenwald in May 1938 for almost a year. His consciousness of the importance of conserving his mental capacities and human integrity during the struggle for daily existence induced him to compose and write also in the camp, e.g. the "Dachau Song, " to build instruments from stolen wood, and even to give a short clandestine concert. He was released from the camps in February 1939 and managed to emigrate to the Philippines, and after the war to the USA. |
