| Abstract | The author, whose guides to the operas of Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Strauss and Wagner have made him a household name to opera lovers, here turns his attention to the bel canto composers. In this volume he discusses every one of Rossini's thirty-nine operas, Donizetti's sixty-nine and Bellini's ten, describing the circumstances of each opera's first performance, discussing the libretto, outlining the plot, and ending with an analysis of the music. For many years the works of the great composers of the bel canto (literally "beautiful singing") were, with certain notable exceptions, kept off the stage because of the immense popularity of the operas of their successors, Verdi and Puccini. However, in the second half of the twentieth century bel canto has come back into fashion, due in large part to the advocacy of a number of conductors from Tullio Serafin to Richard Bonynge, and the emergence of singers with the style and technique necessary to perform the bel canto operas--singers such as Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda and, more recently, June Anderson, Samuel Ramey and Cecilia Bartoli. Little-known operas are now being constantly revived. |
