Summary The Miocene Pungo River and Pliocene Yorktown Formations underlie the central and eastern coastal plain of North Carolina. Portions of these formations, rich in phosphate, are mined near Aurora, North Carolina. This study addresses the depositional histories of the Pungo River and Yorktown Formations by developing a model of sea-level cycles in the Aurora area based on lithologic analyses of 134 samples from four cores (390, 391 GH8.5R and 392). The model demonstrates the effects of changing sea-level and resulting shifts in chemical conditions across the continental shelf that re-occur through time. The model suggests that there were 10 distinct sea-level events; two Aquitanian, three Burdigalian, three Langhian, one Serravallian, and one Pliocene; each identifiable by a combination of sedimentological characters. In addition, there were at least four major erosional events that occurred between the Aquitanian and Burdigalian, Burdigalian and Langhian, Langhian and Serravallian and Serravallian and Pliocene that removed major portions of the previously deposited units.
