Summary This descriptive correlational study was undertaken to identify the relationship of critical thinking dispositions to the critical thinking skills of a group of senior students preparing to graduate from an NLN accredited generic baccalaureate program in the southeastern United States. A sample of 20 randomly selected senior nursing students preparing to graduate completed the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) and the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST). The scores on the CCTDI were moderately high indicating the presence of dispositions necessary for development of critical thinking skills; however, no statistically significant relationship was found between the subjects' CCTDI scores and their CCTST, which reflected the subjects' critical thinking skills. These findings were inconsistent with the limited studies that have been conducted using these same two instruments to measure critical thinking dispositions and skills. Possible reasons for this are attributed to the small sample size, the subjects' stress at the end of the last semester prior to graduating and the level of their cognitive development. Some authors indicate that high levels of critical thinking ability may be an unrealistic expectation for baccalaureate graduates. Further research on critical thinking dispositions and skills using these two instruments with a larger sample size both at the beginning and end of a generic BSN program is recommended.
