Abstract African American studies professor Russell Adams was born on August 13, 1930. He received his B.A. degree from Morehouse College in 1952 and then attended the University of Chicago, where he earned his M.A. degree and Ph.D. After working for four years as a probation officer in Chicago, Adams returned to academia. From 1965 to 1969, he served as assistant professor at North Carolina Central University, and obtained an associate professorship at the University of the District of Columbia. From 1971, Adams served as chairman of the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University. He also developed programs and workshops on cultural and curricular diversity. A popular keynote speaker and university lecturer, Adams published several books, edited collections as well as numerous articles in periodicals such as the Journal of Negro Education. He was a primary advisor and contributor to the three-volume Time-Life series African Americans: Voices of Triumph.
