520 a| Civil rights activist, state representative, and state senator Julian Bond was born January 14, 1940, in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1960, Bond was one of hundreds of students who helped form Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In 1965, after he was elected into the Georgia House of Representatives he was barred from his seat because of his opposition to the Vietnam War. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bond's appointment in 1966. He served four terms as a state representative and six terms in the Georgia State Senate. Bond was the first African American nominated for vice president of the United States in the 1968 election. Bond was also chairman of the NAACP, host of America's Black Forum, president emeritus of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a distinguished scholar in residence at American University, and a faculty member at the University of Virginia. Bond passed away on August 15, 2015.;
