| Abstract | Radio personality and sports promoter Hal Jackson was born on November 3, 1914 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the first African American inducted into the Broadcast Hall of Fame. He moved to Washington, D.C. at age fifteen. In the 1930s, Jackson was an announcer for Howard University and Griffith Stadium. In 1939, he landed his radio show on WINX in Washington, DC where he interviewed pioneering African Americans, highlighting community achievements. In 1949, Jackson began a television career, moving to New York with his radio show, The House that Jack Built. Jackson's civic works included busing underprivileged children to the Palisades Amusement Park to establishing Hal Jackson's Talented Teens International Scholarship Competition. Jackson's popularity allowed him to advocate for civil rights. He participated in numerous history-making events. Jackson hosted Sunday Classics on New York radio station WBLS for more than a decade. Jackson passed away on May 23, 2012 at age 97. |
