Abstract Religions leader Bishop Joseph Lawson Howze was born on August 30, 1923 in Daphne, Alabama. He graduated from Mobile County Secondary School in 1944. Earning his B.S. degree from Alabama State University in 1948, Howze converted to Catholicism and took the name "Joseph" in 1948. In 1952, Howze was admitted to Christ the King Seminary at St. Bonaventure University. He taught at his first Catholic school, St. Monica, in 1952 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He received his D.D. in 1959 and was consecrated titular bishop of massita and auxiliary bishop of Natchez-Jackson, Mississippi in 1972 by Pope Paul VI. Howze was installed as bishop of the Diocese of Biloxi in 1977. As national Episcopal liaison of the Apostleship of the Sea, Howze annually blessed fishing boats in the Gulf. As the first black Catholic bishop appointed in the twentieth century, he became bishop emeritus of Biloxi, Mississippi and retired from the diocese in 2001.
