| Abstract | Dancer, and dance instructor Doris Humphries was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 10, 1924. An early lover of dance, Humphries began taking classes at age eleven. At Englewood High School, after partnering with a fellow student and dance partner, the two went on to perform across the country with Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstein and Dizzy Gillespie as "Dinky and Junior" while working for the William Morris Agency. Humphries retired in 1946 after getting married to focus on her family. She returned to dancing several years later, this time in the duo of "Tony and Tanya Belle." In 1986, Humphries received a grant from the City of Chicago to create an outreach program in the community. Her students ranged from ages three to ninety-two. Humphries taught a variety of dance styles at the South Shore Cultural Center in Chicago, and classes at Oak View Park Center and Moraine Valley College. |
