Abstract University president and professor Frederick Stephen Humphries was born on December 26, 1935 in Apalachicola, Florida. He served as president of two historically black colleges; Tennessee State University between 1974 and 1985 and Florida A&M University (FAMU) between 1985 and 2001. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from University of Pittsburgh graduating magna cum laude in 1964. Between 1964 and 1967 Humphries taught chemistry at FAMU and the University of Minnesota. He returned to FAMU as professor of chemistry between 1968 and 1974. From 1967 to 1974, Humphries also directed the Thirteen-College Curriculum Program devoted to strengthening faculty and curriculum at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As President of FAMU, Humphries successfully worked to increase the number of African American students majoring in the sciences and engineering. He served as president and CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education from 2001 to 2004.
