Officially ordained in 1979, Jakes established the Temple of Faith Church in Montgomery, West Virginia in 1980. In 1993, Jakes launched a weekly television broadcast on Trinity Broadcasting Network, catapulting himself into the world of televangelism. In 1996, after moving his congregation from one small town to another in West Virginia, Jakes moved his family and fifty church employees to Dallas, Texas where they established the Potter's House. The first church service drew more than 2,000 people. The membership grew to more than 30,000. Named one of PBS Religion and Ethics Newsweekly's "Top 10 Religious Leaders" in 2000, Jakes was distinguished as America's Best Preacher by Time magazine and CNN. Bishop Jakes, a Grammy-award winning gospel musician, authored more than twenty books. In 2009, Jakes performed the morning service at President Barack Obama's inauguration.;
