Abstract Physicist and professor Roscoe C. Giles was born in 1949 in Oakland, California and graduated with his B.A. degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1970. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Stanford University in 1973 and 1975, respectively, becoming the first African American Ph.D. recipient in physics from Stanford University. He served as assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1985, he moved to Boston University as an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. In 1999, he worked as a full professor of electrical and computer engineering at Boston University. His research focuses on computer and supercomputer applications and micromagnetics. Giles received numerous awards, including the Computing Research Association A. Nico Habermann Award in 2000. He founded the Institution of African American E-Culture for issues related to the digital divide. In 2010, he chaired the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Scientific Computing Advisory Committee.
